Eat Safe Scheme 200 Not Out In Scotland

A North Lanarkshire very sheltered housing complex has become the 200th establishment in Scotland to receive a prestigious food hygiene award.

Campsie Gardens, of Lennox Road, Cumbernauld which provides purpose built very sheltered housing to meet the needs of older people has been awarded the Eat Safe Award, which recognises excellence in food hygiene and food safety management.

The development features a total of 27 properties, with staff providing two meals a day for those residents who choose to make use of the meal service. Campsie Gardens is only the ninth establishment in the North Lanarkshire Council area to receive the Eat Safe award.

The scheme was launched by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in Northern Ireland in June 2003 and was rolled out across Scotland last year.

The award was introduced to act as an incentive to caterers to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law. By awarding each Eat Safe recipient with a recognisable sign of excellence, it helps consumers decide where to eat, reassuring them that their food has been prepared with the utmost care.

Campsie Gardens cook, Gillian Greig, said she was delighted with the award, which she felt was recognition for the efforts of all staff.

She said: This award recognises all our hard work and effort and shows what can be achieved with a well equipped kitchen, good policies and procedures and dedicated staff. To be the 200th recipient of an Eat Safe Award makes it even more special.

Peter Midgley, Head of the FSAs Local Authority Food Law Enforcement added: This landmark award will hopefully act as encouragement to other catering establishments to aim for the very highest standards in food hygiene and safety congratulations to everyone at Campsie Gardens.

31 of Scotlands 32 Local Authorities have given their backing to the scheme, which was launched following discussions between the FSAS, the Society of Chief Officers of Environmental Health of Scotland, the Scottish Food Advisory Committee (SFAC), Scottish Local Authorities and the FSA in Northern Ireland.

Eligible establishments are assessed for the Eat Safe Award as part of scheduled food hygiene inspections carried out by Environmental Health Services. The issue and control of certificates is through local authorities and are reviewed at every planned food hygiene inspection.
