The Pepper Mill restaurant in Cushendall was today named as the latest food business in Northern Ireland to receive the prestigious Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland(FSANI) Eat Safe Award from Moyle District Council.

Trevor Williamson, Eat Safe Project Manager from FSANI said: “The Eat Safe scheme continues to grow in stature and today’s award goes to prove how more and more food businesses are committed to excellent food safety standards.  Hygiene standards now feature much higher on consumers’ agendas when they choose places to eat out and which all the recent publicity on food safety they are beginning to demand higher quality. 381 food businesses across Northern Ireland now hold the Eat Safe Award and this number is increasing all the time as businesses see the benefits it can bring.”

Presenting the award, Madeline Black, Chair of Moyle District Council said: “I am really pleased to present this award to Marian and her staff at the Pepper Mill today.  The criteria under which this award is given is very strict and with only four premises in the Moyle area holding the award, it shows that this is not an easy award to achieve.”

The Pepper Mill Proprietor, Marian Lau said: “I am delighted to receive the Eat Safe award which is a fitting reward for all the hard work of my staff and I over the years as we always aim to maintain a high level of

quality and cleanliness. I’m really looking forward now to putting up my certificate where all of our customers can see it!”

The Eat Safe award is open to all catering establishments and the main aim of the scheme is to provide an incentive to caterers to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law. It will also help consumers make informed choices about where to eat out by providing a recognisable 'sign' of excellence in standards of food hygiene.  Consumers can check out the Eat Safe website www.eatsafe.gov.uk to see where their nearest Eat Safe accredited food business is.
