Eat Safe in Strabane

Thursday 8 March 2007

Two Strabane businesses, the Sandwich Company and Vienna Coffee Shop were recently presented with the much acclaimed Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland (FSANI) Eat Safe Award. Eat Safe is an award which recognises excellence in food hygiene and is given only to catering businesses who go above and beyond the legal requirements.

Aileen Browne from FSANI says, “It is great to see the scheme continue to grow to include all catering businesses including restaurants and cafes as well as nursing homes, schools and workplace canteens.

“The Agency currently has 334 award winners representing each of the 26 councils and I would like to offer my congratulations to the award winners today and also to commend the hard work and dedication of the Environmental Health Department of Strabane District Council.”

Commenting on the presentation, Sabrina Gillow, Environmental Health Officer from Strabane District Council: “I am delighted to see more businesses in Strabane enjoy the success of receiving the Eat Safe award.  This award presentation brings the total number of award holders in the council area to three which shows that this is not an easy award to attain.  Customers enjoying food from any of these premises should feel assured that the food has been prepared with the utmost care in a safe environment.”

The Eat Safe award is open to all catering establishments and the main aim of the scheme is to provide an incentive to caterers to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law. It will also help consumers make informed choices about where to eat out by providing a recognisable 'sign' of excellence in standards of food hygiene.  Consumers can check out the Eat Safe website www.eatsafe.gov.uk to see where their nearest Eat Safe accredited food business is.
