Subway in Larne’s Main Street was this week presented with the prestigious Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland Eat Safe Award. Eat Safe is an award which recognises excellence in food hygiene and is given only to catering businesses who go above and beyond the legal requirements. The scheme is managed by Environmental Health Departments of Northern Ireland’s 26 District Councils.
Trevor Williamson from FSANI said at the presentation, “It is great to see the Eat Safe scheme continue to grow. The award scheme has only recently opened up for all catering businesses, including schools, workplace canteens and nursing homes.
“The Agency currently has 327 award winners representing each of the 26 councils and I would like to offer my congratulations to the award winners today and also to commend the hard work and dedication of the Environmental Health Department of Larne Borough Council.”
Nuala Brogan, Assessing Environmental Health Officer Larne Borough Council said, “It is great to be able to reward local businesses for their efforts and also highlight to the public those businesses that are ensuring high standards are met often behind the scenes, an area not easily recognised as a customer”.
Larne Borough Council currently has 3 award winning premises. The Eat Safe award is open to all catering establishments and the main aim of the scheme is to provide an incentive to caterers to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law. It will also help consumers make informed choices about where to eat out by providing a recognisable 'sign' of excellence in standards of food hygiene. Consumers can check out the Eat Safe website www.eatsafe.gov.uk to see where their nearest Eat Safe accredited food business is.
