Eat Safe Awards Presented in Omagh

The Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland (FSANI) and Omagh District Council have satisfied the hunger for success of five local businesses by presenting them with Eat Safe Awards in recognition of excellence in food hygiene practices at their premises.

The five recipients were The Sandwich Company, Omagh Meats Canteen, Top Nosh Takeaway, Harold McCauley House and Drumragh Nursing Home. This brings the total number of premises who have achieved the award in the Omagh district to nine.

The Eat Safe Award is only presented to those establishments that consistently exceed the current legal requirements on food hygiene and is a sign for consumers that the businesses are taking every precaution to prevent food poisoning,

The main aim of the scheme is to provide an incentive to caterers to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law.  It will also help consumers make informed choices about where to eat out by providing a recognisable sign of excellence in standards of food hygiene.

The award is administered by the Environmental Health Departments of local Councils in conjunction with FSANI.

Speaking after the presentations, Trevor Williamson, Eat Safe Project Manager with the Food Standards Agency said: “"I am delighted to be involved in these presentations as they demonstrate how the Eat Safe scheme has grown as there are now almost 380 recipients right across Northern Ireland. Consumers in Omagh and across Northern Ireland should feel assured when they go out to eat that they can choose from a wide range of food businesses who take food hygiene very seriously."

Commenting on the awards, Barny Heywood, Chief Environmental Health Officer at Omagh District Council said: “The award is a great accolade to these businesses who have worked hard to achieve high food hygiene and safety requirements.  I would like to congratulate staff and hope their success will act as an encouragement to other food premises/owners/managers in the district to consider seeking this accreditation.”

Consumers can check out the Eat Safe website on www.eatsafe.gov.uk to see where their nearest Eat Safe accredited food business is or contact the Environmental Health Department of Omagh District Council on 028 8225 6202.
