Local Businesses Clean Up at the Eat Safe Awards
Wednesday 23 January 2008

Eight businesses from across the borough of Coleraine were today presented with the much acclaimed Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland (FSANI) Eat Safe Award by Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Maurice Bradley. Eat Safe is an award which recognises excellence in food hygiene and is given only to catering businesses who go above and beyond the legal requirements.
The award winners were:
ˇ Café Lorette, Loreto College, Coleraine
ˇ Cromore Halt Restaurant, Portstewart
ˇ Cuil Coffee, Coleraine
ˇ Cullycapple Primary School, Aghadowey
ˇ Garvagh Care Home, Garvagh
ˇ Harpurs Hill Community Early Years Project, Coleraine
ˇ Brookhill House, Coleraine
ˇ Beulah Guest House, Portrush
Kathryn Baker from FSANI says, “It is great to see the scheme continue to grow with these eight winners from the Coleraine area, to include all catering businesses including restaurants and cafes as well as nursing homes, schools and workplace canteens.
“The Agency currently has 441 award winners representing each of the 26 councils and I would like to offer my congratulations to the award winners today and also to commend the hard work and dedication of the Environmental Health Department of Coleraine Borough Council.”
Commenting on the presentation, Alexis Cann, Senior Environmental Health Officer from Coleraine Borough Council: “I am delighted to see more businesses in the Coleraine Borough enjoy the success of receiving the Eat Safe award. This award presentation brings the total number of award holders in the council area to 36. This is not an easy award to attain so customers enjoying food from any of these premises should feel assured that the food has been prepared with the utmost care in a safe environment.”
The Eat Safe award is open to all catering establishments and the main aim of the scheme is to provide an incentive to caterers to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law. It will also help consumers make informed choices about where to eat out by providing a recognisable 'sign' of excellence in standards of food hygiene. Consumers can check out the Eat Safe website www.eatsafe.gov.uk to see where their nearest Eat Safe accredited food business is.
